Dubrovnik – The Pearl of the Adriatic
Dubrovnik is one of the most beautiful cities in the whole of the Mediterranean area. This medieval town is a treasure trove of history and culture. The car-free old town is a UNESCO world heritage site. Its walls are 1940m long, up to 6 metres wide and you can walk all the way round them. They are the best preserved fortification system in Europe, and contain a perfectly preserved complex of buildings - communal and private, secular and sacred - from every period of the towns history beginning with its founding in the 7th Century. Most notable are the main promenade ('Stradun'), The Onofrio fountains (big and small), the Count's palace (Palaca Sponza), the Church of St Blasius (sv. Blaho), the cathedral, 3 large towers, the customs house and the town hall. Also worth seeing is the Orlandos Column. The oldest pharmacy in Europe has been housed in the town's franciscan Monastery since 1397. The world's oldest Arboretum – begun in 1492 – is also nearby in the town of Trsteno.
